Armenia signed United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities

A new treaty to ensure the human rights of the estimated 650 million people in the world with disabilities opened for signature on March 30 during a special session of the United Nations General Assembly. Ani Hovahannisyan, 18, from Armenia “Bridge of hope” NGO have participated in signing ceremony.

Eighty-one countries participated in the signing of the new United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Some 350 representatives of disability organizations from around the world were present for the negotiations.
On behalf of world’s disabled youth two young people, 19 years old Mauricio Gutierrez, from Nicaragua and 18 years old Ani Hovahannisyan, from “Bridge of hope” NGO, Armenia, made a speech at the special session. Both young speakers face the stigma and discrimination that comes with having a disability.

“Children with disabilities need education from an early age,” said Ani in her statement to the United Nations. “In every society there are stereotypes towards people with disabilities, which are difficult to eliminate. It is through children that we can change our societies and make them more inclusive. Children more readily accept others the way they are – no matter how different.”

Following the high level meeting in New Yourk, the Minister of Labor and Social Issues Mr. Aghvan Vardanyan invited a press conference "Our country has made tangible progress in ensuring that the rights of persons with disabilities are respected and that the environment conducive to their full integration into the society is created...",- said the Minister emphasizing that,- ...”it is much more important to focus attention on implementation of existing laws, rather than develop new ones”.

The Ministry of Labor and Social Issues and UNICEF have been working closely to address problems of people with disabilities, particularly those faced by children with disabilities through improving services, assisting in mainstreaming children with disabilities into inclusive schools and raising public awareness to promote their full integration into the society.

"This Convention is the first treaty focusing exclusively on disability rights to be adopted by the UN General Assembly, " UNICEF Representative Sheldon Yett said during the press conference.
The Minister and UNICEF representative congratulated two young Armenian advocates with disabilities who traveled to New York to participate in the signing ceremony at the UN General Assembly on March 30, 2007.
